The healthy person has 1,000 wishes.
The sick person has just one wish.
Ever hear that saying?
Thing is, all important appointments get cancelled when something goes really wrong with your health.
It’s truly your greatest resource…and supporting it is your number 1 responsibility—not just to yourself but to anyone depending on you.
But that’s quite a load to shoulder alone, particularly when juggling other responsibilities.
And, let’s face it. Today’s conventional healthcare system is really set up to treat sick people. It does a lousy job of keeping people well (at least in a way that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg).
So what to do?
Having a holistic support plan in place allows you to lean into a caring professional—one who knows you.
It also adds the critical element of compassionate accountability. This is where I’m receptive to your needs…and help you stick to commitments. I do so in a way that highlights curiosity and mindful investigation…as well as resourcefulness and practical solutions.
My job is to anchor and guide your efforts to make healthy changes.
Who’s this for?
Maybe you’re dealing with specific health concerns…or working toward goals related to wellness, eating and lifestyle.
Or perhaps you already feel pretty good, but want to keep it that way.
You recognize that regular, consistent support would make a difference. And you want an established relationship with a trusted practitioner who takes time with your case.
The Holistic Concierge Plan fills that need—and can help you get and stay healthy.
See, the “right” way of eating changes throughout the course of a year…and the course of a lifetime. So does the “right” combination of herbal medicines and supplements.
Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors recognized this and, indeed, took it as the basis of their clinical practice and “business model.” Sure, folks would head to their doctor when sick. But they’d also maintain the relationship throughout the year, going for regular visits and receiving adjustments to herbal prescriptions and eating guidance as needed.
The objective wasn’t just to treat illness—but to prevent it from happening in the first place.
What happens when you sign on for 6 months of care?
Together, we’ll determine where you are and where you want to be with eating and health. Then I’ll provide consistent support to get you there.
I’ll also address any rough spots that arise, whether common colds, injuries, dietary difficulties or other health concerns.
As part of this, I pay special attention to eating and lifestyle patterns. I also carefully monitor any prescribed herbs and supplements. With these and eating guidance, I make adjustments as needed.
If you sign on, here’s what I see for you:
- Going the whole year and getting sick as little as possible (perhaps not at all)
- When you do get sick, recovering quickly
- Having the support you need to stick with a healthy eating pattern
- Feeling good about your food, and eating in a way that helps you thrive
To get there, I’ll put a system in place covering:
- Medicinal herbs and supplements to support health and speed recovery from illness or injury
- Acupuncture treatment (for in-person clients) to move your body toward balance
- Simple strategies for preventing colds, flu and other common ailments
- How to eat for long-term health, including eating guidelines tailored to your needs and goals
- How to eat in a way that’s full of pleasure, nourishment and abundance
- Chinese Medicine guidance for eating to support balance, immunity and vitality
- How to listen to your body and trust what it’s telling you
- How to make set-backs in health or eating valuable self-experiments
- Why self-care is (at least) as important as a bottle of pills or set of “food rules”
Okay…so what’s that look like?
The components of this plan are: eating guidance, medicinal herbs and supplements, acupuncture, and compassionate accountability.
Let’s look at each.
Food is a cornerstone of staying healthy.
What’s more, your relationship with food and eating patterns are just as important as what’s on your plate.
I’ll develop a plan integrating healthy eating guidelines with modifications tailored to your needs.
These may include:
- Meeting bodyweight and composition goals
- Transforming unhealthy eating patterns
- Boosting energy and vitality
- Sustaining balance and wellness
- Promoting digestion and metabolism
- Promoting immune and endocrine function
- Alleviating acute or chronic ailments
Combining medical assessment and treatment with practical, mindfulness-based “food coaching,” I’ll work with you to develop a plan supporting long-term health.
“Sounds intense. Are there hardcore food rules?”
No (at least in 98% of cases). Sure, there are certain health conditions that do best with a restrictive eating pattern (at least for a while, as the body heals).
Generally though, my emphasis is on eating an abundance of real, whole food. This includes high-quality animal protein, veggies and fruits, and healthy fats. For most people, it includes a “sensible indulgence” every now and again too.
Eating well shouldn’t be miserable. I’ll help you eat in a way that supports your goals plus tastes delicious!
“Uh…animal protein. Do I have to?”
No. I work with vegetarians and even vegans.
More generally, I meet people where they are and respect their choices.
As a doctor, it is my responsibility to point out areas of deficiency (or excess) in clients’ eating patterns. But ultimately, you’re the boss of your body. I’m here as a guide—not to push or force.
In the 90 days I worked with Dana, I achieved some really amazing results:
- Eating 95% clean Paleo/Primal with ease, joy, satisfaction. It doesn’t even take effort for me anymore. I’ve built a life-long new way to eat.
- I changed my relationship with food entirely. I’ve always been a comfort food person—I emotionally eat—and that has shifted dramatically. Now, I can get my needs for comfort met in ways that honor my body and overall health too.
- I was a huge night-time snacker. That’s completely vanished.
- I was incredibly, deeply addicted to sugar—like methamphetamine-level addicted to sugar. I can enjoy it when I have it on occasion, but I do not crave it anymore.
- Before I worked with Dana, I was 230 pounds. In 90 days, I’m down 23 pounds. Easy. Sustainable. Long-term weight loss…and that trajectory continues. This is last on the list for a specific reason: I used to be really, really attached to my weight and the number on the scale. Working with Dana also helped me shift that into perspective. I keep tabs on it, but it’s SO much less important to me. I have a much better relationship to my body and whole being due to my work with Dana. That will support me for my lifetime!”
My three main objectives were to: improve digestion; clear up my skin; and find inspiration and creativity in the kitchen (formerly, I was extremely domestically challenged). I anticipated the paleo/primal lifestyle to be one of restriction, discipline, and self-control. I felt like I was about to embark on some new fad diet…
After consulting with Dana, I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of adjusting to this new way of eating and preparing food. Even learning which foods to buy (and where) was less intimidating than I imagined. I gathered recipes (lots and lots of them), stocked my kitchen with loads of spices and good fats, and purchased a few new cooking gadgets (keep in mind, previously the only thing cooked by me in my kitchen was toast).
Over the next few weeks a true miracle happened in my home. Ask my husband. Ask my friends and parents. Mincing, chopping, marinating, basting…culinary delights of all kinds started manifesting. I’m talking complete, multi-course meals!
I love the way I feel eating this way. I do have better digestion. Far better! My skin looks the best it has ever looked. I’m FULL and satiated all day…
I thought that the battle with sugar could only be won through willpower. The fullness I feel from eating the right fats has stopped the cravings for sugar all together. All of my intentions have been met and then some.”
The Chinese materia medica, or compendium of medicinal substances, contains hundreds of herbs used to treat and prevent disease.
Many of these are parts of plants, including seeds, roots, stems, bark, leaves and flowers. Others include minerals and animal products.
Herbs are combined in specially crafted formulas and administered as teas, powders, granules, capsules, tablets or tinctures.
“If I’m eating well, why use supplements and herbs?”
And you know, if you’re eating a nutrient-dense diet aligned with your individual needs, that may be enough. But eating optimally in today’s world is really hard—and not only because we’re surrounded by junk food.
Even if you make stellar choices, nutrients in our soil and food have declined significantly. This is partly due to efforts to make things sweeter, more homogenous and less perishable. And it’s partly due to environmental toxins that are impossible to avoid completely.
Even whole, organic food just isn’t as healthy as it used to be. As a result, it’s tough to get optimum nourishment (even when eating “perfectly”).
What’s more, if you have specific health conditions, herbs and supplements can bring better results than food alone.
High-quality herbs and supplements complement a healthy diet, bridge nutritional gaps, address specific ailments, and help us thrive.
What do I mean by “thrive”? Think a stronger immune system, a more balanced endocrine system, healthier organs and stronger bones. Also think reduced symptoms like pain or nasal congestion. And when you do get sick, herbs can speed recovery.
“Can’t I just buy supplements at a health food store?”
Yes. (But I wouldn’t.)
There’s a vast spectrum of quality out there. I use only superior, medicinal-grade products meeting the highest standards. The companies I source from sell exclusively to licensed health practitioners.
As a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, I have extensive, rigorous training in this area. I’m also certified in herbology at the national level through the NCCAOM.
Prescribed by someone with proper training and experience, herbs and supplements can be a powerful, safe addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle. But prescribing them is an art and a science, so you’ll want to make sure you’re in skilled, caring hands.
As part of this plan, you’ll get a $25 credit each month to use toward prescribed herbs and supplements. For costs exceeding that amount, I’ll work with you to fit your budget.
Don’t want herbs and supplements?
That’s cool too—I won’t push. Some people, for various reasons, prefer to focus our work on eating guidance.
This plan is here for you. And you are in no way required to use all its components.
For me, it was really the herbs and supplements that made the difference. Finally my stomach pain is gone! I know it works because when I tried to go off the herbs—just to see—the pain came back. I’m working on diet too, but herbs really changed things. They brought relief. I can’t remember when I felt this normal.”
Before starting herbal treatment, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. I was looking for a holistic approach for a long time, since regular medicine didn’t fix my problems. I was tired and cold all the time and my body temperature was really low—sometimes 95 degrees in the morning. Four weeks after starting herbs, my temperature went back to normal. Overall, my health improved by at least 40%. I also learned more about my own body and mind.”
If you sign on as an in-person client, acupuncture is included with your sessions—this is why they are a bit longer in duration.
Acupuncture is an integral part of Chinese Medicine and involves insertion of extremely fine, sterilized, single-use needles into specific points.
These points are located along channels, or meridians, that work a little like waterways connecting every part of the body.
In general, acupuncture brings the body and mind toward balance, helping to:
- Regulate the systems of the body, including the nervous, endocrine, digestive and immune systems
- Open blockages and increase circulation to repair injuries and ease pain
- Regulate emotions and the sleep cycle
In this way, it helps treat and prevent many ailments. It also offers excellent support for:
- Reducing cravings
- Stepping out of addictive cycles
- Changing body-mind patterns, including those related to eating
“Hmm…needles. Does it hurt?”
Although people have different levels of sensitivity, acupuncture usually does not hurt.
When a needle is first inserted, you may feel a momentary sensation. Some common ones include a slight pressure or heaviness, a slight ache, a tingling or electric feeling, and warmth. You may experience something like this, or you may not notice much at all. If a needle remains uncomfortable, simply let me know and I’ll adjust it for you.
Proven effective through centuries of practice, acupuncture is used by millions of people worldwide. Its continual expansion in the West offers testament to its powerful efficacy in preventing and treating disease.
Over the past 2 months, Dr. Dana has treated me for elbow pain (tennis elbow) and weight loss. The acupuncture helped more than anything with my elbow. Before, it was always hurting and inflamed, especially when I help coach my son’s baseball team. The pain is 90% better. It flares up sometimes but barely bothers me. I can play ball no problem.”
Acupuncture really calms my mind and makes me feel less stressed. I’m super-busy with my job and kids and never really have time to relax. During and after acupuncture treatment, it’s like my nervous system takes a break. I don’t understand why, but it’s amazing. It’s like the needles are in and I feel everything calm down right away.”
“Well then, if I miss out on acupuncture, is it still worth it?”
Yes! This plan is designed to work with or without acupuncture, and many of my clients are long distance. If you’re unable to get to me in-person, eating guidance and prescribed herbs and supplements offer powerful results on their own.
Also, I take special care to ensure my long-distance clients feel fully supported.
For this reason, I include an email check-in each week in addition to your phone sessions. This gives us extra opportunity to connect. I encourage you to ask questions or bring up any concerns during this time, and I’ll provide feedback, guidance and support. Which leads to…
Whether we’re connecting in-person or staying in touch by phone and email, what you get goes beyond eating guidance, herbs and acupuncture.
Often, even when you “know what to do,” it can be really helpful to have a guide walk with you along the way.
I’m here to offer skilled, healing companionship as you move toward your desired destination.
What’s that look like?
You know, it depends.
- Some people find it easier to stay on track if they’re checking in with a practitioner they trust and who’s cheering them on.
- Others want a framework or guardrails for conducting “self-experiments” with food or lifestyle shifts.
- Others want someone to guide them through mindfulness-based exploration of habits, patterns or even addictions.
I offer all this, and respond to what you most need.
As a 43-year-old man, I have “typical” middle-aged male issues—a belly, some joint pain, and a fairly sedentary life. I’m also a smart, successful guy. I’ve done dietary and exercise research for decades, and I’m fairly well educated on what I need to do—what I’m supposed to eat and how I’m supposed to move my body. I didn’t need education on what to do—I needed support to integrate it into my life…
I wanted to take eating healthy and exercise from hard, exhausting and unsustainable to easy, simple and nourishing, requiring little thought or energy to make it happen. That’s exactly what happened… The shift is radical and dramatic—I feel the effects every day. And I have finally stopped trying to eat well and move my body—now, I just do it. And I honestly love it.”
Why should you get this help from me?
Before I became a doctor, a health crisis brought me face-to-face with how my own eating and lifestyle patterns needed to change.
This was not an easy process, but it left me with much compassion for others on a similar path. It also created a strong desire to help ease the way—providing the sort of knowledge, skills and support I could have used.
I know firsthand that the combination of holistic medicine, primal eating and mindfulness works—and I’m passionate about sharing it.
I’m a licensed Doctor of Oriental Medicine – Acupuncture Physician in Colorado, Florida and Maryland. I’m also a certified Primal Health Coach trained in ancestral health and nutrition.
I’ve treated hundreds of patients over the course of thousands of treatment sessions. My speciality is helping people who struggle with weight, diet and digestion problems, including eating addictions and eating disorders.
How’s the plan work?
This is a 6-month, renewable program with in-person and long-distance options.
We start with an initial intake session.
This gives me an opportunity to find out lots about you, including your current health and eating patterns, your health history, and your specific needs and goals.
(If you’ve already completed one 6-month period and are renewing, this longer session serves as a thorough, mid-year assessment.)
After this session, you’ll receive:
- Customized eating guidance
- Herbal diagnosis and prescription of medicinal-grade herbs and supplements,
along with a $25 credit to use toward prescribed herbs purchased through Alchemist Eating
You’ll get another $25 herb credit each month of the plan.
Sessions for long-distance clients will be conducted by phone. Herbs and supplements will be shipped to you directly.
In-person clients also receive:
- Acupuncture treatment
The initial intake session is 90 minutes for in-person clients, allowing time for acupuncture. It is 60 minutes for long-distance clients.
Long-distance clients also receive:
- Weekly email check-ins
This is in place to help you stay on track and request specific feedback. It lets us remain connected even though we aren’t working together in-person.
Monthly return sessions include the same services, with an emphasis on continuity of care and movement toward your desired destination.
Return sessions are 60 minutes for in-person clients, allowing time for acupuncture. They are 30 minutes for long-distance clients.
During each return session, I will:
- Check in to see how you’re doing and whether anything has changed
- Assess progress toward individual goals around health, lifestyle and eating
- Troubleshoot areas of concern or challenge, ensuring you leave each session with clear, doable next steps
- Prescribe any needed adjustments to your eating guidance and/or herbs and supplements
Is that all?
Almost. But I do have a bonus for you.
If you recall, part of what you’ll receive during our sessions is individualized eating guidance—clear, customized guidelines to help you eat in a way that supports your goals.
To aid you in implementing this guidance, I’m throwing in my…
Eating for Health, Eating for You Grocery List
In addition to covering the basics (animal proteins, fruits and veggies, fats and oils), it includes sections on pantry staples, snacks and treats.
It also lists “good, better, best” options for particular foods (making it easy to choose between pasture-raised and cage-free eggs, for instance). And it lets you know when buying organic is most important…and when it’s less so.
Finally, my list includes space for additions and notes, so you can jot down any specific recommendations I offer during sessions.
What if it’s not all you hoped and dreamed? Are you stuck with me?
Here’s the thing. I ask for a 6-month commitment for a reason.
In most cases, it took a while to get to where you are with eating and health. Pretty reasonable then, to expect it to take at least 30 days to reach a new “baseline” or see real change.
Usually, that’s just the beginning.
Imagine for moment you sign on for this plan. You take your prescribed herbs and supplements, stick to my eating guidance at least 80% of the time, and by day 30 are seeing wonderful progress toward your goals.
Now imagine yourself 6 months later, after getting consistent support to sustain that progress. Expect a difference between “you” after 30 days and “you” after 6 months? Thought so.
There will be ups and downs along the way, no doubt. But where you are after 6 months of working with me will likely look way different than the 30-day mark. Things, ideally, will keep getting better from there.
But what if, after 30 days, you’re just not happy with how it’s turning out? To make it super-safe, I offer a 30-day:
Love Me or Leave Me Guarantee
Thing is, for a healing partnership to bring results, both partners have to be into it.
So, if you find yourself falling out of love after the first 30 days, I’ll graciously offer you an out. In other words, there’s NO obligation to stay on for 5 more months if you wish to part ways after day 30. No exceptions. No strings.
And, though I’ll surely be sad to see you go, I promise not to stalk you like a bad ex. Some relationships just weren’t meant to be (>sigh<).
